This is an imperial sci-fi court in integral red monochrome, the exact chromatic inverse of Black Blossom. I wrote the whole court into spec boards: The Empress, The Red Widow, The Scarlet Envoy and the Throne Sentinels. The court has since gone to the screen. The Empty Throne was produced in one night, and it opens the dossier with its complete making-of.

A raised hand for an answer

The Scarlet Envoy is the one the court sends to negotiate. Talking is the whole job, and she wears a chrome voice rig at her throat to do it.

She is let in through the black doors. They walk her the length of the mirrored floor, up to the throne. The throne is empty.

The Red Widow answers for the empty throne. She is the enforcer of that court, and she raises a hand instead of saying anything. The two women face each other on the steps. Then the chamber is still again, the way it was before the Envoy came in.

The court

The Empress is the living symbol of the empire’s power, and she is almost never the one who speaks. Below her the court runs as a machine of roles: the Red Widow enforces, the Scarlet Envoy is sent out to negotiate, the Throne Sentinels stand the room in two hood variants, V-1 and V-2. The Ceremonial Poleblade is drawn with callouts, the way a piece of equipment is drawn. The Throne Chamber has its own board. Everything is red on black, the exact chromatic inverse of Black Blossom, and that inversion is deliberate. I built both worlds the same way, and building them in opposite palettes is what makes the method show.

The Empty Throne

The film states its subject in its first line: every court is a performance. The Envoy is let in through the black doors to negotiate with power. Speech is forbidden in the throne chamber. She is walked the length of the mirrored floor, up to the throne, and the throne is empty. A line answers for it: “I do not guard the Empress. I guard the idea of her.” The film is delivered with that voice unnamed, and this page does not name it either. Protocol, the film says, is older than truth. Nobody is deposed and nothing is revealed. The performance must continue, and it does. The whole film was produced in a single night, and its making-of ships with it.
